Listening to: You’re a Dog by Remi Wolf
Genre: Alternative Pop
I didn’t expect Remi to come so soon as I wanted to save her album for maybe sometime later when I hone my writing skills, but You’re A Dog starts with the letter Y, so I can’t argue with the positioning.
Thankfully, this is also my least favorite Remi EP. Not to say it’s bad or anything, but this is the furthest to the Remi sound that I’m used to when listening to her newer records like Juno.
Remi in You’re A Dog is brash, energetic and chaotic. Her earlier tracks exude this unrefined, bed-room like pop of someone who may or may not have taken recreational drugs. I don’t mean that in a bad way, quite the opposite.
Hearing Remi’s instrumentation being this rough yet still distinctly Remi was quite a treat, especially after hearing her groovier records today. Tracks like Rufus and Guy are very unique in a sense that these two songs have a somewhat close connection to the deluxe track in Juno, Michael. I really didn’t like them at first, like how I didn’t like Michael, but they grew on me due to just how quirky the flow of the song was and Remi’s more disjointed vocals.
But you can also see which direction she took her upcoming record with thet tracks Doctor and Sauce with the latter being remade in the “Live at Electric Lady” session which was my most listened EP/Album in 2022 due to how addicting each track was. That’s how I first found Sauce and listening to the original recording was a very weird experience, just like how I listened to the Tiny Desk of Anderson .Paak before his studio album.
Nonetheless, this is still a fundamentally Remi album. It may not be my favorite, but I still love it to death and shows Remi’s growth in her songwriting and composing skills. Really wishing she’d drop an album this 2024, though.
