Listening to: Chon by Chon
Genre: Prog-rock
Year: 2019
As I was listening to my Groove Collection playlist, I happened to stumble upon what seemed to be a very interesting mix of Polyphia and American Football by the name of Chon, specifically the track Rosewood. I instantly fell in love with the instrumentation. I played the album and went on with my commutes.
Despite that and the fact that I primarily listened to this record on my phone, this was an insanely rich and detailed listen. As the instrumentation has a lot of focus on a very clean mastering, you won’t find any track to sound compromised in any sense. The mastering is just absolutely fantastic how the percussive instruments balanced out the rest of the mix, especially that bass that is audible and tactile yet on the Rhapsody doesn’t induce any boominess which is very common when listening to music on that set.
Each track is wonderfully composed to with no lyrics and just pure instrumentation. I remembered Polyphia and American Football in particular due to the crisp instrumentation from AF’s debut and Polyphia’s rather complex and well-layered instrumentation. The left right panning between the two guitars is also absolutely insane in every single track.
My favorite by far is Gift due to just how crazy good the percussive instruments are placed in contrast to the rest of the mix. There’s this almost reverb-like quality to the percussive that make them sound distant yet very detailed and crisp. And we can’t forget the way the guitars contrast the bass with almost perfect harmony.
I’m definitely going to spend more time with this album as not only music I enjoy but as test tracks just for how well mixed this record is.
