Listening to: True Love – Tohpati
Year: 2022
Genre: Jazz
First and foremost, a shoutout to wardaug for suggesting this album. Didn’t really expect people to suggest albums to me, but it’s great cus I can check out completely new stuff!
I’ve never heard of Tohpati before, so this marks another first for an artist for me. Doing some light searching, he’s an Indonesian jazz guitarist and is apparently one of the most famous jazz guitarist in Indonesia. As someone who really enjoys jazz, this is a very high praise and got me quite excited. But, I really had no expectations.
But as soon as True Love played, I instantly fell in love. If I could describe the songs in this record, it’s the auditory experience of a smile. That’s because I couldn’t stop smiling at how good this album made me feel. Each note flows like water and fills me with good energy.
The instrumentation on this album is also fantastic. Tohpati’s guitar exudes such character that got me to imagine myself walking in a dense forest with his distinct guitar strums echoing throughout the trees. The strings and percussive gently compliment his guitars with a near-perfect harmony throughout the entire album.
And thanks to this album purely being instrumental, I never found myself being alienated trying to understand any lyric. Once again, the universal language of music reigned supreme in providing such a beautiful orchestral experience.
I am absolutely in love with this album. This lowkey reminded me of soundtracks to videos games that I hold very dear like Genshin Impact and Outer Wilds due to its somewhat nostalgic sound. It’s so soothing and I genuinely wouldn’t mind using this as my sleeping album. 36 minutes of rich and soothing instrumentation. Such a beautiful album.

Flow: 8/10
Mixing: 9/10
Complexity: 5/10
