Listening to: Freudian – Daniel Caesar

Year: 2017

Genre: R&B

As we mark my first week of the 1 album per day, I want to commemorate it through an album that I’ve actually listened to a lot in the past but want to revisit as this is a hallmark album in my life.

Freudian, released by Daniel Caesar in 2017 was once said to be one of the most beautiful albums of the 2010s. And it doesn’t take a detective as the first track, Get You, exudes this level of smoothness through every note that I’ve not heard in many albums prior.

Thick, textured but lush bass that reverberates throughout your body like the blood that flows through through your veins is present in every single track in the record.

The flow of each song is also impeccable. I especially loved the transition from Loose to We Find Love It almost feels like a hidden record nearing the end of Loose that continues the story on the next track. It’s not rare for albums to do such a thing, but it was beautifully executed in this album.

And I recently fell in love with the track Neu Roses (Transgressor’s Song). It has got to be one of the smoothest drops in a non-EDM song I’ve ever heard. From calming vocal harmonies to that absolutely sexy drop. There was a period in my life where that was all that I listened to and I did not regret any second.

But it’s those first two tracks that really resonated with me all those years ago. My youth was filled with petty love and heartbreaks and those two tracks defined those times along with a playlist literally called “vibes”. It was a wonderful time and I look back at it with happiness as that was the time before I felt like life started to fall apart around me.

I won’t expound further as it probably wouldn’t fit this particular album. But maybe one day, I’ll talk about the album that lived with me throughout those darker times.

Nonetheless, Freudian is a beautiful album. From start to finish, you’ll feel so loose as you let the music flow through you. You end up stop thinking about the world around you and just feel the music. I love this album and I will always feel nostalgic about this album.

My total absolutely unbiased scoring:

Vibe: 10/10

Flow: 8/10

Mixing: 8/10

Complexity: 4/10

Consistency: 7/10

Emotional Factor: 10/10
