Listening to: Toxicity – System of a Down
Year: 2001
Genre: Metal
This has got to be one of the weirdest albums I’ve listened to so far. And the best part is that many of the songs in this album were a big part of my childhood.
I can still remember my days playing Rock Band Unplugged on my PSP 2000 and attempting to play Chop Suey on the hardest difficulty and I struggled. But I loved every moment that I hit the right things because that song was just so weird and crazy.
Aerials and Toxicity were the other two songs that stuck with me in my youth, but mostly because a local band called Parokya ni Edgar made a cover mixing Toxicity and Chop Suey into one song talking about literal Chop Suey.
And I thought that it was just limited to those songs. But turns out, the entire damn album is equally just as weird. With most of the topics talk about injustices played through heavy instrumentals and Serk Tankian’s unmetal like vocals makes this album both such a treat to listen to and confusing to understand.
But that’s what makes it quite special I’d say. Most of the albums I’ve heard the past few weeks made sense. This didn’t. And I appreciate when something doesn’t make sense because it makes me think “why does this not make sense”. And I just start to think why the hell the album even exists. But nonetheless, it’s truly one of the albums of the early 2000s.
My total absolutely unbiased scoring:
