Listening to: Me Chama De Gato Que Eu Sou Sua – Ana Frango Electrico
Year: 2023
Genre: Alternative Pop/MPB
This is my first “foreign” record in 2024 and first South American record I think ever. I only found out about this track from the man with the whitest teeth in the game (Anthony Fantano)’s year end top 50 albums of 2023 and I was enticed when he mentioned Bossa Nova, Funk and Disco vibes which tick every single one of what makes me love an album.
But with the very obvious language barrier, I was definitely skeptical whether I could fully enjoy this record. Thankfully, the funk transcends language as I found myself bopping and grooving through each track. From the bombastic Electric Fish to the more melancholy Camelo Azul. It was 31 minutes and 31 seconds of a vibe both in the danceable and laid back sense.
A groovy track is obviously sitting on the backbone of groovy instrumentation with a deep and hard hitting bass that isn’t always just funk but has influence from dance hall and house which I noticed when I started moving like I was in a bar on tracks like Dr. Sabe Tubo.
Fundamentally, this is a record to make you feel good. Never did I feel out of it during the entire album as every single moment was gripping and groovy. Despite not knowing what the song was talking about, the universal language of groove was more than enough for me not to care and just move to the beat.
My total absolutely unbiased scoring:
Vibe: 10/10
Flow: 9/10
Mixing: 7/10
Complexity: 5/10
Consistency: 9/10
Emotional Factor: 8/10
