In the latest installment of KZ’s planar, we have a change in pace not only in name but also aesthetics. Meet the PRX, this $50 that is aiming to prove that the 1st gen PR2 was not a fluke and that can create competitive planars. The question is, did they achieve that?
The unboxing is basically the same as every other KZ set with the basic cable, foam eartips installed and silicones included.
The first upgrade from previous KZ planars is the aesthetic. This is, by far, the best looking PR series IEM they’ve released. A unique blue line fills the 3 prongs and the distinctive PR faceplate to boot. Additionally, you also have a unique looking planar driver with a teal coloration and, wait, is that a mesh on the driver?? Yep, they brought back the mesh with the PRX. Now we’re hoping and praying that the PRX keeps this unlike the PR2.
This is also the most mature sounding KZ planar released to date. While it still follows a relatively similar target to the previous planars, the level of refinement is genuinely insane. The midrange is considerably more full and the treble is tamer. In a way, they’re also moving to the “modern” neutral sound signatures with their sets like the Saga which, despite being considerably bassier is also far tamer than their previous sets. What I love about the PRX is despite this tamer sound, it maintains an exceptionally detailed and technical sound that competes well beyond its price range. This is at the cost of timbre which the PRX still unfortunately has a rather distinct metallic timbre. However, this speed is carried over throughout the entire sound which proves the PRX a very consistent, technical and far better tuned than their previous planar IEMs. Maybe not as fun or as detailed, but will cater to more people for sure.
