BEHIND THE BOX: CCA Trio

CCA Trio! Or was it the Legendary? Whichever it was, it’s finally here and I’d like to share with you all my thoughts on the Trio.

So, the Trio was released at $40 and featured 3 8mm dynamic drivers. Seems like the realistic step up from the Duo released last year. But I had a hunch that this would instead follow their Rhapsody formula due to its popularity in its heyday.

And guess what, I was right! This has an almost perfect representation of the Harman-tuning, which is impressive on its own. You might already know me as someone who doesn’t prefer the Harman tuning, but I can appreciate one that is represented pretty well.

And to segue a bit, you know how the Chopin was the budget variations? Taking a similar tuning philosophy but cutting down on refinement and technical ability? Well, I’m honestly confident to say that the Trio is a budget Chopin. Big, fun, and booming bass that is still quite clean and, while tucking in the midbass, still gives the midrange a decent amount of body and a distinctively emphasized upper midrange that puts it in front of you in contrast to the lower mids cleaner and more open presentation.

And against the Rhapsody? It’s almost like they listened carefully to the comments with the somewhat puffy bass and lackluster treble presentation and improved upon it while keeping the fundamentally Harman-style tuning in check.

It’s definitely arguable whether this is what Rhapsody should’ve been if they had let it cook for a little longer, but you can’t really argue that KZ/CCA has been improving with each of their set and I’m all for improvement!
