KZ furthers their single driver prowess with the Zenith, a $60 “new generation” single DD IEM with tuning switches. This is probably their most mature product to date and I want to share my impressions with you.
First, the unboxing experience is a massive improvement for KZ. Instead of a small, basic box with almost nothing, they’ve finally decided to include a decent eartip holder and a case. A case! KZ including more than just the bare necessities is rare and I’m hoping they keep this up, at least with their flagships.
Build wise, this is a full metal IEM akin to some of their recent sets like the Saga. It resembles the likes of the D-Fi a little closer not only shape wise but also how it fits. I do like the faceplate pattern a lot as it minimizes scratches by minimizing the surface area of the faceplate. Unfortunately, the cable is still the same crappy cable that comes with all their IEMs.
Sound wise, the Zenith is essentially the amalgamation of all their “diffused field” IEMs that started with the D-Fi. However, it’s vastly improved from the D-Fi from driver speed to overall refinement. if you liked the D-Fi, you would love the Zenith. I did, at least. They just did so much right with the Zenith while keeping the price relatively low. It’s still not going to compete against $100 hybrids, but KZ has improved their full-range DDs to the point where it’s a genuinely competitive option if you’re looking for a single DD IEM with solid tonality and decent technicalities.
