Blast from the past, part 2! This time, we’re taking a gander at NF Audio’s update to the set that introduced me to the brand itself, the NM2+! This set is from their “monitor” series of in-ears and is priced at $160. Many people claimed this sounded the same as the NA2+, so let’s find out if it actually is!
Starting with the unboxing, you get a very aesthetically pleasing and clean experience with the accessories laid out nicely. If you saw my unboxing of the NA2+, it’s essentially the same with the main difference being the color schemes and the specific details.
The unboxing experience isn’t the only thing that is similar with the NA2+ as the build is also very similar. It’s a full metal construction with a QDC 0.75 connector and a somewhat thin and tangle-prone braided cable. Comfort is hit or miss depending on what tips you use.
And while it may look like the NM2+ sounds exactly the same based on the frequency response graph, the listening experience tells a different story. First, the NM2+ is much easier to drive than the NA2+. This has the effect of the NM2+ sounding better on less powerful or less clean devices. The NM2+ also has a more vivid vocal presentation and brings out nuances in the upper vocals while keeping the midrange clean and open. The distinctive quality that both sets have is the rather energetic top end that sounds perfect for acoustic and instrumental tracks to bring out the details at the cost of tonality and note weight. The NM2+ skews the tuning to be even more vocal-forward than the NA2+ and can be a little too much on vocal-forward tracks. You either love or hate this kind of sound and a treblehead like me adores this. It’s definitely on the more extreme side in my opinion, but I’d argue that’s what makes it special!
