BEHIND THE BOX: Simgot ET142

  • March 1, 2025

The rebirth of the Simgot planar! Even though the last planar were headphones from 2016… Regardless, Simgot is older and more mature to create a $219 planar with the interesting quirk of being a hybrid planar. How does this modern planar perform?

The unboxing is admittedly better than your usual Simgot. You get far more eartips and even tuning sponge to place in the nozzle! The case is the same that came with the EA1000 and EA2000, so that jack holder is still there. Unlike the EA1000, it makes sense to include with the ET142 thanks to the LC7 modular cable.

As you might expect from Simgot, the ET142 is built like a tank and aesthetically more fragile than the thin end of a Rupert’s Drop. A full metal build will always be the best kind of build for me, but a pairing that with a glossy finish ensures that I will be panicking every time I hold these. Thankfully, the cable that comes with the ET142 is their $70 LC7 modular cable. Beautiful, premium and comfortable. No better way to describe it.

The sound of the ET142 is what I’d call the “Frankenstien’s Monster of the Simgot sound”. You get the modern, warmer and bassier Simgot sound that caters to people who like a more fun and engaging sound while the treble is bright, sparkly, energetic but surprisingly smooth like their older, brighter tuning. You get a total of 4 tuning nozzles this time around varying from warm as heck to bright as crap. I love the bright as crap tuning, as you can tell with my previous posts. The sound is genuinely really good. One of the few things that sets Simgot apart from the competition is how well they tune their IEMs to have amazing separation and layering ability while keeping the overall sound smooth. I experienced a level of euphoria listening to well-mixed tracks on the ET142 that I haven’t before, and that’s saying a lot. But the tuning is far from neutral and can get a little too much on both the bass and treble side. But as modern planars go, it presents the soundscape in a way that only modern planars can. Fast, clean decay but amazing note weight and definition.
