Come with me as I share my impressions on the Simgot EW100 DSP, Simgot’s update to the well-received budget offering from Simgot, the EW100 (and EW100P), now with DSP or Digital Signal Processing to fine tune and improve the tuning from the original. But did it really improve on the original? What were the drawbacks of the change? Let’s find out today!
FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
- Similar unboxing to the EW100P but even more barebones
- Similar build, aesthetics and fit to the EW100P (but non-detachable because DSP)
- Balanced, slight U-Shape sound signature
- Thumpy, punchy and deep hitting bass
- Thin lower mids with a forward and energetic upper mids
- Smooth, decently extended treble with average detail retrieval
- Average techs for the price
The EW100 DSP doesn’t stray far from the EW100 lineup in tuning which is a great thing as it allows the EW100 DSP to have a still somewhat balanced sounding tuning with added heft and thump in the low end thanks to the DSP. It then keeps the rather forward but very energetic and nuanced upper midrange that smoothly transitions into the treble where it has a decent amount of microdetail without sounding grainy or dark. This is an improvement from the original as the upper midrange has the tendency to sound a little grainy and unrefined where the added bass energy allows the EW100 DSP to somewhat smoothen that area out. The tuck in the lower mids also somewhat give the perception of a somewhat wider sounding stage as vocals and instruments are placed a little bit more distant and a little bit thinner.
However, the bass tucks down at 200hz which may make lower octave instruments and vocals sound a little thin and recessed which makes them a tad bit leaner in presentation. This loses the organic and slightly warm tinge to the vocal and instrumental presentation that the original EW100P provided which I dearly loved. You might even find the bass a little too boomy as it reminded me of some TWS where there is a considerable boost in the sub and midbass region that swiftly cuts to the lower mids.
Overall, this is quite a fun set coming from Simgot with quite the bass energy without sacrificing too much tonally. It’s a rather safe set and a great set to recommend to casual people due to its type c output and safe, consumer-friendly sound. Terrific job Simgot!
